bean boy - untitled [FUNK021]
bean boy reveals himself to the world via his debut release: 'untitled'. Delivering a wide, stereo-field filled with environmental sound design, which slips into and out of grooves, the record progresses significantly throughout- not just from song to song, but also within its individual tracks. Sprinkled with enamoring melodies and production tricks as commendable as they are courageous, a firm juxtaposition of sound is formulated and executed with undeniable prowess.
Both this album and artist find an exceptional balance between quality composition (in a traditional sense) and experimental production (keeping an eye on the ever-developing future of music). The style is one reminiscent of artists such as Lusine, Culprate, and Alon Mor- to name just a few. This should, however, not be interpreted too stiffly as the unique polymerization of those influences in conjunction with a profound depth of original thought results in a sound authentic enough to leave any skeptic without rebuttal.
Perhaps bean boy's most distinguishable technique, still, is his use of space in regards to the environmental soundscapes he develops throughout his various plights with production.
Utilizing both slow and fast-panning, bean boy forces the focus of his observer to recognize each minuscule crevice, and every interminable cavern, threading together, seemingly with total ease, a single compositions most delicate component with its most boisterous. That very same, aforementioned quality, along with the sheer density of compositions, leave not just a desire, but a need, to revisit the record in its entirety multiple times over in order to truly capture all that exists within its contents.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Alec Denny- known to us as "bean boy"- is a self-taught musician, producer, and all-around artist hailing from Seattle, Washington. The same mind and body fueling the project's audio rhythms are, without exception, responsible for their visual counterparts. This duality as an artist is not only rare, but tenacious even, working in pursuit of a singular product bound by two apparently differing mediums.
The visual components of Denny's work most often depict simplistic, deconstructed figures, which despite this limited detail, manage to still convey a powerful range of human emotion. His work is as intriguing as his music and can be found in the links below.
The level at which this particular individual, just now finishing his senior and final year of high school, creates and pursues art is certainly not something to ignore. So, be sure to listen to ‘untitled’ upon release and understand how bean boy hears the world.
